Fittest Team in the AFL Training

Port Adelaide is regarded as one of the fittest team in team sports and there sports science and strength and conditioning program is often held up as a model of best practices. This inside look provides some interesting insights on their pre-season program:

  • Use of monitoring with GPS and heart rate and a full staff to monitor outputs
  • Constant feedback via wireless to coaches on physiological data
  • Looking for the total distance covered in practice to be 20% greater than what is seen in games
  • Limiting water breaks to 60 seconds and requiring players to run to them
